The passage behind it

Deuteronomy 8:8 describes the land as one of wheat and barley, vines, fig trees and pomegranates, olive oil and honey. The list is a description of a good land, not a menu God commanded. This bowl simply gathers those foods into one dish.

Ingredients

  • 4 fresh figs, quartered (or 6 dried figs, sliced)
  • Seeds of half a pomegranate
  • A small bunch of grapes, halved
  • 250 g thick yoghurt or curds
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons toasted barley flakes or cracked wheat
  • A few chopped almonds
  • A thread of good olive oil

Method

  1. 1Spoon the yoghurt or curds into two shallow bowls.
  2. 2Arrange the figs, grapes and pomegranate seeds over the top.
  3. 3Scatter the toasted grain and almonds.
  4. 4Finish with honey and a thread of olive oil, and eat slowly.

Read it honestly

  • ✕ Proverbs 25:16 warns about too much honey. Sweetness is good and still has a measure.

A blessing for the table

Lord, you gave a land of figs and pomegranates and oil. Teach us to receive good things with thanks and measure.

A suggested prayer, not a Scripture quotation.

Foods in the guide

“And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”
Deuteronomy 8:3

In context: Hunger in the wilderness taught dependence on God, not a diet technique.

“Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.”
Proverbs 25:16

In context: Enjoyment with a limit: eat what is sufficient.

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7

In context: Anxiety is met with prayer and thanksgiving. This is not a promise that symptoms disappear.
