Good, with an explicit warning about excess
Honey
One of the few foods Scripture directly warns you not to overeat.
Biblical principle← Food Guide
Where it appears in Scripture
Proverbs 24:13, 25:16 and 25:27; John the Baptist ate locusts and wild honey (Matthew 3:4).
What Scripture says
- Honey is called good and sweet.
- Eating too much honey is called not good — a direct statement about excess.
What Scripture does NOT say
- Scripture does not compare honey with modern sugar or sweeteners.
- It gives no gram limit.
New Testament context
John the Baptist eats wild honey in the wilderness. Revelation also uses sweetness as an image for receiving God's word. Neither passage overturns Proverbs' unusually direct call to restraint when something good becomes excessive.
Common misconceptions
- "Natural sweetness cannot be overused." Proverbs explicitly calls honey good and still warns against excess.
