Fruit of the land

Figs

A common fruit and a recurring image of peace or of judgment.

Biblical permission← Food Guide

Where it appears in Scripture

Deuteronomy 8:8; sitting under one's own fig tree pictures peace (1 Kings 4:25).

What Scripture says

  • Figs are part of the land's abundance.

What Scripture does NOT say

  • Scripture receives figs as part of God's abundant provision; fibre, sugar and portion questions belong to present-day wise stewardship.

New Testament context

Jesus uses the fig tree in teaching about fruitfulness, judgment and watchfulness. The symbolic use concerns spiritual response rather than the fruit's health effects.

Common misconceptions

  • "Figs are spiritually superior because they symbolize peace." A symbol does not create a dietary rank.
