Galilee broiled fish with herbs
The meal the risen Jesus shared on the shore.

The passage behind it
Luke 24:42-43 says they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. John 21:9 describes a fire of coals with fish laid on it, and bread. The fish of the lake were clean under Leviticus 11:9 — fins and scales. Tilapia, carp or sea bass all suit the method.
Ingredients
- 2 whole fish with fins and scales (about 400 g each), cleaned
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 lemon, sliced
- A handful of fresh herbs: parsley, mint, coriander
- 2 cloves garlic, sliced
- Salt and coarsely ground pepper
- Flatbread and bitter greens, to serve
Method
- 1Score the fish twice on each side and rub inside and out with olive oil and salt.
- 2Fill the cavity with lemon slices, garlic and half the herbs.
- 3Grill over coals or under a hot broiler for 6-8 minutes a side, until the skin blisters and the flesh flakes.
- 4Rest for three minutes, scatter the remaining herbs, and serve with warm flatbread and greens.
A blessing for the table
Lord Jesus, you ate with your friends after the resurrection. Sit with us at this table too.
