Ezekiel's hearth flatbread

Six grains in one loaf, from a prophetic sign — baked as everyday bread.

150 min · 6 serves

The passage behind it

Ezekiel 4:9 lists wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet and spelt, put in one vessel and made into bread. The passage calls us to witness a prophetic sign of siege, scarcity and dependence on God. The mixture also makes an excellent loaf today, but receive that as a kitchen observation rather than a promise attached to the verse.

Ingredients

  • 250 g wheat flour
  • 100 g barley flour
  • 60 g spelt flour
  • 40 g millet flour
  • 40 g cooked lentils, mashed
  • 40 g cooked beans, mashed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 7 g dried yeast (or 100 g active sourdough starter)
  • 350 ml warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method

  1. 1Mix the flours and salt in a large bowl.
  2. 2Stir the yeast into the warm water, then add the mashed lentils and beans and the olive oil.
  3. 3Combine wet and dry, then knead for 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. 4Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 90 minutes, until roughly doubled.
  5. 5Divide into six pieces, flatten each into a round about 1 cm thick, and rest for 15 minutes.
  6. 6Bake on a hot stone or heavy tray at 230 °C for 10-12 minutes, until puffed and lightly browned.

Read it honestly

  • ✕ Ezekiel 4:12-15 is about fuel and defilement, not diet. The prophet objects, and God relents on that point.
  • ✕ If anyone sells this bread as a biblical health formula, the verse itself does not support the claim.

A blessing for the table

Father, you teach us to ask for daily bread. Make us grateful for the loaf in front of us today.

A suggested prayer, not a Scripture quotation.

Foods in the guide

“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Matthew 6:11

In context: Jesus teaches his disciples to ask God for ordinary food, one day at a time.

“And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”
Deuteronomy 8:3

In context: Hunger in the wilderness taught dependence on God, not a diet technique.

“For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.”
1 Timothy 4:4-5

In context: Written against teachers who forbade foods. Thanksgiving, not a food list, is the emphasis here.
