This is a subject where Christians hold different convictions in good faith. The verses on both sides are real. Here they are, with their labels.
What is affirmed
Biblical permission- Psalm 104:15 — wine gladdens the heart of man.
- 1 Timothy 5:23 — a little wine for Timothy's stomach.
- John 2 — Jesus provides wine at a wedding.
What is condemned
Biblical command- Ephesians 5:18 — be not drunk with wine.
- Proverbs 20:1 and 23:29-35 — drink that mocks, bites and captures.
- Leaders are warned specifically (1 Timothy 3:3; Titus 1:7).
Wisdom beyond permission
Biblical principle- 1 Corinthians 6:12 — lawful is not the same as helpful, and nothing should gain power over us.
- Romans 14 — love may lead a free person to abstain for another's sake.
- If drink has ever had power over you, abstinence is wisdom, not weakness.
What Scripture says
- Wine is permitted and praised; drunkenness is always condemned.
What Scripture does NOT say
- Scripture does not command anyone to drink, nor require universal abstinence.
- Scripture gives no measure of 'moderate'.
Questions to reflect on
- Is there anything I drink, eat or watch that has power over me?
A suggested prayer
“Lord, keep me free. Let nothing rule me except You.”
A suggested prayer, not a Scripture quotation.
