Gluttony and self-control

A subject Scripture treats seriously — and gently, without shaming.

← Bible & Health

Scripture never says 'you are disgusting'. It says appetite can become a master, and it offers a better master.

What Scripture actually warns about

Biblical principle
  • Proverbs 23:20-21 — habitual excess leads to loss.
  • Philippians 3:19 — appetite can take the place of God.
  • Proverbs 25:16 — eat what is sufficient for you.

Self-control is fruit, not willpower alone

  • Galatians 5:22-23 lists temperance as fruit of the Spirit.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 pictures training: repeated, unspectacular practice.
  • So progress is normal, and failure is not final.

A gentle first step

  • Pray before eating, out loud or silently, every time — for one week.
  • Stop at sufficient once a day, not at every meal.
  • Notice what you reach for when you are tired or anxious.

What Scripture says

  • Excess is treated as a spiritual matter; self-control is grown, not forced.

What Scripture does NOT say

  • Scripture never equates body size with sin or with godliness.
  • Scripture gives no calorie or portion rules.

Questions to reflect on

  • What am I actually hungry for when I eat without hunger?
  • Could this be an area where God is calling me to greater discipline?

A suggested prayer

“Lord, give me strength to practise self-control today, and grace when I fail.”

A suggested prayer, not a Scripture quotation.
