At the Lord's table, ordinary food becomes a commanded act of remembrance, proclamation and shared belonging.
Given by Jesus
Biblical command- At Passover, Jesus takes bread and the cup and directs them toward his body and blood.
- 'This do in remembrance of me' makes the meal an act of obedient memory.
- The church proclaims the Lord's death until he comes.
One bread, one body
Biblical principle- 1 Corinthians 10 joins participation in the bread and cup to the unity of Christ's body.
- In chapter 11, humiliating poorer believers contradicts the supper's meaning.
- Self-examination is therefore not food anxiety; it is truthful participation in Christ and his people.
What Scripture says
- Believers are commanded to remember and proclaim Christ together through the bread and cup.
What Scripture does NOT say
- The passage does not make ordinary bread or wine spiritually superior outside the supper, nor does it support excluding the poor.
Questions to reflect on
- Do I approach the Lord's table reconciled to the people with whom I share it?
