Hygiene in the law

Washing, waste, quarantine — described centuries before germ theory.

God's law orders the camp, bodily life and responses to contagious disease. We can receive its wisdom while honouring its revealed purpose before God.

What the law includes

Biblical command
  • Deuteronomy 23:12-13 — human waste buried outside the camp.
  • Leviticus 13-14 — examination, separation and washing for skin disease.
  • Numbers 19 — washing after contact with a dead body.

Honest reading

Interpretation
  • The stated frame of these laws is ritual purity before God.
  • They also have evident practical effects, while their revealed frame remains purity and obedient care before God.
  • Faithful reading can recognise those effects without placing modern germ theory into the biblical text.

  • The law regulated sanitation, washing and separation of the infectious.
