Scripture directs fasting toward God. As a faithful steward of your body, join prayer with wisdom, honesty about your condition and appropriate medical care.
Before you begin
Stewardship & health note- Honour the life God has entrusted to you: if you are pregnant or nursing, have diabetes, a history of eating disorders, are a child or are frail, seek a doctor's guidance before fasting from food.
- If you take medication, faithful preparation includes asking a physician first.
- A fast from a habit — screens, news, purchases — is also biblical in spirit and may be wiser for you.
A simple shape
- Choose the purpose first: what am I seeking God about?
- Choose a small, honest span — one meal, one day.
- Drink water. Keep your work and duties.
- Use the freed time to read and pray, not to talk about fasting.
Afterwards
- Break the fast gently, with simple food.
- Write one sentence about what you noticed.
- Do not announce it.
What Scripture says
- Jesus assumes his followers will fast, in secret, with the Father in view.
What Scripture does NOT say
- Scripture directs the practice toward the Father rather than prescribing one length, schedule or method, or guaranteeing health results.
Questions to reflect on
- What is one honest, small fast I could keep without telling anyone?
