Some clean, some unclean
Birds and fowl
Leviticus 11 lists forbidden birds, mostly birds of prey and scavengers.
Biblical permission← Food Guide
Where it appears in Scripture
Leviticus 11:13-19; quail in Exodus 16 and Numbers 11; doves in offerings.
What Scripture says
- The law names specific birds Israel was not to eat.
- Quail and pigeon appear as food or offering.
What Scripture does NOT say
- No reason is given for the bird list, and no nutritional claim is made.
New Testament context
Jesus speaks of birds as creatures fed by the Father and uses hens and sparrows in teaching. These images reveal providence and care, not a new food list.
Common misconceptions
- "Predatory birds were forbidden because their flesh is toxic." Scripture gives a list within Israel's holiness law, not that medical reason.
